BLISS BAGS NATIONAL INNNOVATION AWARDBliss biodegradable horse bedding in degradable bags was presented with a 2008 innovation award at the British Equine Trade Association (BETA) International Exhibition at the NEC. Bliss Bedding is the first biodegradable bedding manufacturer to use degradable bags that rot down on a muckheap in months. The new bags which were launched at BETA International 2008, are oxydegradable which means they contain a catalyst that starts to break down the plastic when exposed to heat and light. Horse owners that use Bliss Bedding have always been conscious of the environment and the need to protect it; trials have seen the new bags prove extremely popular. In the first stage of decomposition, which is accelerated by heat and exposure to sunlight, the plastic goes brittle and breaks down into tiny pieces. These pieces are broken down further by microorganisms and become water, carbon dioxide and biomass. The bags can also be recycled as the high temperature processing of the bags into pellets destroys the catalysts. Orders for Bliss Bedding, chopped and dust extracted straw treated with essential oils, have doubled during the last twelve months and Managing Director Graham Stubbs explained why he decided to go one step further and use the more expensive but more environmentally friendly bags. “We know our customers are passionate about protecting the countryside and the environment. This way, they can put the bags on the muckheap with the used bedding and watch them break down quickly.” Said Graham Bliss Bedding is chopped and treated straw with added essential oils. For the winter months, eucalyptus oil acts a mild decongestant, which can also kill air born germs. Bliss Citronella is available in the summer to ensure the stable has a great fresh citrus smell – something very unpopular with flies and biting insects! Bliss is a natural product, made from sustainable resources and is highly biodegradable. Bliss balls and goes hard when it’s wet so it handles more easily than straw or shavings, which means less of it is used and wasted.
